In the tradition of Thomas Szasz, who challenged the medical model of mental illness, Peele challenges the prevailing model of addiction as a medical disease. The disease model, he argues, conceals the social and personal character of addiction. In so doing, it excuses addiction and prevents more appropriate responses those beginning and ending with personal responsibility and constructive community. Note: in spite of the formal terms of argument, this is really the conservative-libertarian side of an ongoing political debate regarding individualism and society.
