Elizabeth Halperin is always choosing the wrong man. First there was Howard Hack, her talentless novelist husband who became a bestseller only after being knocked off at a glitzy Halloween party (see Mommy and the Murder). Now Elizabeth has gotten involved with Jonathon Nichols, a wealthy real estate developer and newcomer to the Berkshires who is at work building a tasteful shopping mall in downtown Lenox, Massachusetts. One night Elizabeth receives a tense call from Jonathon, asking her to meet him at the construction site to discuss something urgent. She agrees to meet him - and what she finds is urgent, indeed ...As can happen in the quiet Berkshire town, Elizabeth's life takes a quick turn for the bizarre. A strange cast of characters has descended upon Lenox, poking around town for inside information on Jonathon: a pair of seemingly harmless older men who claim to be with the FBI; a German immigrant couple searching for millions of stolen investment dollars; and an icy, overly made-up, overexercised woman who is spreading the word that she and Elizabeth are old pals. To complicate matters, there is also Simon Montgomery, a stunning, dark-haired mystery man who sweeps Elizabeth off her feet and tells her something alarming: Thirty million dollars has been stolen and a misguided murderer is now stalking Elizabeth to get it back.
