At the height of the Soviet regime's power, the communist leadership believed they faced potential nuclear strikes capable of knocking out their counter-strike capacity. To foil this threat, they designed a system called Dead Hand, a method of retaliation that could be relied on even if every person in the Soviet Union was incinerated. The perfect Doomsday machine, or so it seems.When an asteroid unexpectedly strikes Siberia with the force of a thousand Hiroshimas, Dead Hand is triggered, its fail-safe control commandeered by ultra-nationalist General Likhatchev. Likhatchev threatens to topple the government in Moscow, and his partisans block all attempts to stop him.
