This report is based on a public workshop held in Washington, D.C., in December 2006 by the Forum on Microbial Threats of the Institute of Medicine, to consider the scientific and policy issues relevant to the practice of human, animal, and plant disease surveillance and detection. A detailed summary and assessment of the workshop's presentations and discussions is followed by 17 papers organized into four sections covering surveillance strategies, surveillance networks, detection and diagnostics, and resource needs and opportunities. Each section is introduced with a detailed overview and concludes with a list of references. A sampling of topics: syndromic surveillance in public health practice, wildlife and emerging disease surveillance, the role of nontraditional surveillance tools in global public health surveillance, rapid infectious disease diagnostic assays, and a public health laboratory perspective on improving infectious disease surveillance and detection.
