Originally published in two parts as The Guns of Normandy and The Guns of Victory, this combined volume describes the fierce fighting in the months which followed the D-Day landings in June 1944. It is an almost unparalleled slice of history, for as the author writes, 'some were casualties within hours of joining units, and, of the few who survived to see it through all the way with a rifle company, none seemingly have been able or willing to write of it.'From landing in Normandy in July the author was in the front line continuously for the next 10 months. The book covers the Battle of Caen, the closing of the Falaise pocket that entrapped the German armies in Normandy, through to the crossing of the Seine and the fighting through Belgium and Holland into Germany in appalling conditions of snow and mud.
