Part of a longstanding and useful series, the articles of this year's volume review the current literature and summarize the state of research on 13 topics, introduced by a memoir article by Alexander Dalgarno of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Among the topics featured are water in the solar system, supernova remnants at high energy, the Crab Nebula, evolution of debris disks, and nuclear activity in nearby galaxies. Each article is clearly organized in outline style and well illustrated with graphs and photos, most of them in color, making this an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students as well as specialists. Written by astronomers and physicists in the US and Europe, each article concludes with a lengthy bibliography. An author index of past issues from the series is included; the volume lacks a subject index. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
