Although he doesn't spell it out explicitly, the intention of editor Polsby (U. of California at Berkeley) in putting together this collection of 17 papers seems to have been to present an example of the variety of topics treated and methodologies employed in American political science. This edition of the Annual Review takes up such topics as an analysis of the attacks of September 11th within the context of the literature on strategic surprise, the development of interest group politics in America, the construction of judicial review, the evolution of "principal-agent" models, constitutional reform in Britain, the effectiveness of deliberative democracy, the relationship between theory and policy in international relation, the role of government in mediating international economic integration and inequality, and the theoretical contributions of international relations theorist Ernst B. Haas, among other topics. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
