Updating the 1996 edition in light of many new developments (e.g., the failed Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in 2000, September 11th, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan), this new edition presents some 3,000 entries covering topics in fields such as politics, history, economics, religion, sociology, and literature. Approximately one-third of the entries are biographies, including 200 new biographies of women. Sensitive topics such as terrorism, the Palestinian al-Nakba, and anti-Semitism in the Arab world are discussed openly and plainly. The entries end mid-way through volume four and are followed by a comprehensive 300-page index, a glossary, a synoptic outline of the entries, an alphabetical list of the same, a list of contributors, and a section of charts showing genealogies of families and dynasties. What photographs and maps there are are b&w (though nicely done). Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
