This chronological account spans 40 years in the history of American objectives in the Middle East across several American administrations. The book analyzes ten crises in the Middle East during the Cold War, from the Iran Crisis of 1946 through the Palestinian Question, the Suez War, the Six-Day War, the Iran revolts, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War. Incidents and episodes were chosen on whether they threatened key US allies, had the potential to provoke a wider regional conflict, or could have entangled the US and the Soviet Union in war. Investigation into American archives reveals that promoting democratic regimes was not Washington’s goal for the region during the Cold War era; instead, Washington aligned with authoritarian regimes of the Middle East in order to prevent Soviet infiltration of the region, secure access to petroleum wealth for the West, and negotiate conflict between Jewish homeland interests and the Arab states.
