First published in 1909, the letters written home to his family a century earlier by Major, later Lieutenant-General, William Warre, were edited by his nephew, the then Provost of Eton, Dr Edmond Warre. William had been a senior ADC to Marshal Beresford for over three years during the Peninsular War.From the first landing in Portugal in 1808 through the retreat to Corunna, and apart from absences and sick leave, to the decisive battle at Salamanca in 1812, Warre wrote with a light and perceptive touch to show the dramas of life with the Allied Army under Wellington. The original letters are reproduced here with added comments by William A Warre, great-great nephew of General Warre, to identify more closely the events described and the personalities involved.
