What effect did warfare have upon the social, economic and institutional structures of the early-modern period? What was it like to live and fight in the armies of early-modern Europe?Historians have traditionally been concerned with questions of tactics and strategy, with the descriptions of campaigns and the technical side of warfare, and have only recently begun to set armies and warfare within social and institutional contexts. Reflecting the concerns of the 'new military history', Frank Tallett looks at the impact war had on early-modern European society. He shows how and why armies of unprecedented size were raised, and describes the ordinary soldier's experience of conflict and his life in the army. War is shown to have had profound implications in several different ways. At the local level, warfare brought about demographic changes and affected patterns of land tenure. More generally, war had a profound though variable influence upon the growth of state power and the development of the economy, whilst the high costs of waging war had financial implications for every section of society. The book provides a comprehensive overview of warfare between 1495 and 1715 and offers new and challenging insights into the military history of the period.
