Set in the Barbados of the 1790s, this is perhaps the earliest novel of the Anglophone Caribbean to have been written by a native of the region. The romantic tale of Jack Goldacre's eventually successful efforts to win the hand of Caroline Fairfield is interwoven with the much gloomier story of Caroline's black half-sister, Lucy, whose search for love and happiness is confused and at length confounded by the prejudices of class and race inherent in the very nature of slave society. There are many vignettes of life in Barbados at the end of the eighteenth century, from ballooning experiments to the famous episode of Prince William Henry's uproarious night out at Rachael Pringle's hotel. This edition also includes Orderson's The Fair Barbadian and Faithful Black, a comedy performed in Barbados in 1832 whose character Hampshire offers the most extensive representation of black Barbadian speech known from the slave period.
