Preparation of this volume involved extensive interviews with more than 100,000 people living in 21 countries on six continents, and introductory chapters discuss the methods of the World Mental Health Surveys as well as the epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behavior. Subsequent chapters address the prevalence and course of suicidal behavior, lifetime risk factors, 12-month risk factors and treatment around the world, and policy and research implications of the findings. The appendices occupy roughly 150 pages, presenting data in tabular form. The three editors are affiliated as follows: Matthew K. Nock (psychology, Harvard U.), Guilherme Borges (National Institute of Psychiatry and Metropolitan Autonomous University, Mexico), and Yutaka Ono (Keio U., Japan).
