Florence benefits by a vast number of historic works, but it is also true that historians have mainly focused their attention on single artists or monuments with monographic works. Today there is the feeling and the conscience of an overall Cultural Good, as the piazza or, more in general, as the urban space. The piazza is, indeed, a complex reality, physically defined by the buildings surrounding it and by its paving design. But, at the same time, it contains the settling of works of art, sculptures, fountains, equestrian monuments, obelisks. A piazza is also a 'noble receptacle' of episodes regarding the city: for example Piazza della Signoria, that has been crossed by all the civic, social and political history of Florence, also made of immaterial cultural goods. The volume studies the piazza as a unique, complex and en pleine air Cultural Good, capable of recounting art, architecture and civilization. Enriched by the photographs of Carlo Cantini, this volume describes the following piazzas: Piazza del Duomo, Pitti, San Firenze, Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, Santissima Annunziata, Santo Spirito.
