In the 19th century, European visitors to China often brought home as souvenirs paintings or drawings illustrating Chinese life. Emil Vasilyevich Bretschneider, who spent 18 years as physician at the Russian embassy in China beginning in 1866, took the activity many steps further than most. He was extraordinary in that he learned Chinese and wrote on many subjects pertaining to the country's history, archaeology, and botany. In addition, he commissioned a large number of paintings from Chinese artists. Three hundred and two paintings are presented full page in this oversize volume (10x13.5 ") with brief explanatory captions. For example: "A bone-setter treats a patient after putting him to sleep by a special method."
