The author describes how teachers can organize students for different learning experiences that align with changing goals and assessment results or other student or class characteristics, to help students make progress in social, emotional, and intellectual skills; promote equity; and foster a healthier sense of community and collaboration. She argues that flexible grouping addresses stereotypes that give learning privileges to some and deny them to others due to tracking and other practices. She discusses the purpose and benefits of flexible grouping, planning for more effective flexible grouping, implementing it, using different procedures for grouping, and understanding the potential pitfalls and troubleshooting them, as well as the promise of flexible grouping.
