Earth science experts from the diverse fields of active and passive deep seismic sounding, petrology, and petrophysical modelling, as well as scientists from the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) community penned the 34 contributions from the April 1997 workshop contained herein. The workshop had two focal points: the presentation in digitized format of seismic observations on super long-range profiles of nuclear test explosions in the former U.S.S.R. and the integration of information from deep seismic soundings and other earth science fields with the work of CTBT experts. The papers are divided into four sections on: the potential of Russian peaceful nuclear explosion data; novel techniques in upper mantle exploration; one- to three-dimensions upper mantle models; and upper mantle structure, composition, and dynamics.
