The U.S.-Algeria relationship is characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. The United States has been supportiveof Algerian independence, and both nations are committed to further improving the bilateral relationship through increasedtrade, education, and cultural partnerships. The two nations are allies in the fight against terrorism, an issue that is of particularimportance to Algeria, which went through a black decade (1991–2001) when the Front Islamique du Salut (FIS) conducted acts of terror that set the nation on edge and claimed more than 100,000 lives. In this volume, we will address Algeria’s ongoing reforms to diversify its economy, the formation of a stronger democracy, and its effort to position itself as a pillar of stability in the region.
