Developmental anthropologist Smith attempts to describe how distinct cultural models of political economy have influenced ecology, power, and diversity in Latin America. He applies Douglas North's model of new institutional economics to explain the economic histories of the Latin American countries, but argues that understandings of the political culture explain the creation of distinct economic models. He presents separate regional examinations of the various countries and argues for greater implementation of neoliberal reforms. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
