Concepts of scale are used often in ecology, geography, sociology, and other fields, but rarely by historians and archaeologists, who are the authors of the nine papers contained in this collection. They reflect on early medieval rural societies in north-western Spain, the English landscape in the late Roman period, local power in the early medieval Iberian north-west, the Italian countryside from late antiquity to the early middle ages, and exchange, coinage, and the economy of early medieval England--among other topics. The volume is the result of a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science titled "The Foundations of the European Space: Community, Territory and Political Systems in Early Medieval Europe." It is issued as part of the series "Medieval Countryside," which takes a regional approach to the rural history of the European continent between 1000 and 1500. The affiliations of editors Julio Escalona and Andrew Reynolds are not stated. Distribution in the North America is by The David Brown Book Co.
