When the French Impressionist artist Degas died in 1917, his collection of over 5,000 paintings, drawings, and prints came to light. This volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), from October 1997 to January 1998, is not a catalogue of the collection (published separately as The Private Collection of Edgar Degas: A Summary Catalogue ). Rather, it is a definitive work on Degas as collector and the relation of the collection to his own work. Thirteen essays (some previously published) discuss Degas' passionate involvement with French 19th- century masters and the art of his contemporaries. The essays are abundantly illustrated with art by Degas and others Manet, CTzanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, Cassatt, Delacroix, Ingres, Daumier. Paper edition (799-8), $45. 9.5x12" Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
