Das (a former senior editor of The Times of India ) and van der Linden (research director, International Institute of Social History, the Netherlands) present 11 essays from Asian and European scholars in honor of Dutch sociologist Jan Breman's work, which primarily dealt with labor relations in India and Indonesia. After an academic remembrance, the essays explore such topics as the social position of small farmers in India, the nature of work in the Bengal borderlands during the Partition, and the role of landlord credit in Filipino rice cultivation in the 1920s. Also included is a bibliography of Breman's writings. Distributed in the US by South Asia Books. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
