Writing in a style intended to be accessible to a non-academic audience, Guthrie (sociology and management, New York U.) reviews Chinese economic reforms and their impacts over the past 25 years. He argues that social and political reforms related to the economic reforms have been both radical and deep, indeed much more so than most people outside China realize. He further argues that reforms have been successful because of, rather than in spite of, the intervention of the state. His final major point in this work is to argue that because of these reforms, an inevitable process of democratization has been set loose in China.
