On India's North-East Frontier a killer elephant is on the rampage, stalking Assam's paddy-fields, murdering dozens of farmers and leaving behind their mutilated and crushed bodies. Local forestry officials, powerless to stop him, call in Dinesh Choudhury, one of India's last licensed elephant hunters, and issue a warrant for the rogue's destruction.Reading about the ensuring hunt in a Delhi newspaper Tarquin Hall flies to Assam to investigate. He is convinced that no elephant could be guilty of the grisly crimes of which the rouge is accused and suspects that the authorities are up to no good. But as Hall and Choudhury embark on their search for the rogue, riding on domesticated elephants, Hall's preconceived ideas begin to unravel. The country's elephants, he discovers, have lost their natural habitat and are at war with the local population. Gone are the days when wild herds roamed the vast rain forests at peace. Now, humans infest every last corner of the landscape and poachers slaughter the beasts for their ivory. To the Elephant Graveyard is a gripping tale of the search for a killer in a region rife with insurgency, rich in folklore and superstition, and whose ancient ways are fast disappearing.
