This compendium focuses on four groups the Hopi of the Southwest, the Tlingit of the Northwest, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Iroquois Nations of the Northeast; a short concluding chapter features urban Indians. Each page contains a mix of photos, captions, narrative text, and quotes from Indian songs, interviews, and writings. Two-hundred-plus photos of artifacts from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History's American Indian collections are featured, along with some 100 photos (both historical and contemporary) of the people who made and used the items. The whole comprises a visually interesting and information-rich though somewhat disjointed resource, lacking a single map or timeline. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
