This is the first of several volumes of biographical sketches of members of the American Philosophical Society elected between 1743 and 1768. Entries vary in length from two to six pages and describe the lives and contributions of ordinary merchants, artisans, small farmers, and clergymen, as well as great figures such as Benjamin Franklin. Sketches are arranged chronologically by date of election, and some are accompanied by b&w portraits. Includes an alphabetical list of names with page numbers; a cumulative name and subject index will be printed in the last volume of the series. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
