Heavy shelfwear, with spine particularly rubbed and cracked; title somewhat obscured. Joints starting at tips, and corners scraped and erose. Page edges lightly toned and top edge dust stained. Endsheets quite foxed, and front pastedown and inside of board cracked somewhat near top corner. Early owner's name (MV Dahlgren?) inked to front pastedown; possible signature of John A.B. Dahlgren, Civil War Navy officer and inventor of the Dahlgren gun, to front endpage. Small dampstain to bottom front gutter. Pencil notation throughout. From the library of American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter William Safire.
