Haysom (visual arts, Deakin University, Australia) does not whitewash the life of Australian artist Arnold Shore (1897-1963). The youngest of a working class family, the economic and emotional difficulties of his childhood left him somewhat timid. He was also subject throughout his life to severe bouts of depression. Haysom chronicles Shore's life as an artist, teacher and art critic as well as relating personal details of his late sexual awakening, long term relationship with a much older woman, his despair at her death and finally, his tumultuous marriage. While the text tells of the events of Shore's life and his work, the many full-page representations of his paintings demonstrate the influence of Van Gogh and the very Australian use of color and form in his landscapes.
