This beautifully designed book presents selections from the Special Collections of the Amsterdam University Library where editor Mathieu Lommen is curator. He provides a brief overview of the history of the book, of book design, and of the origins of the University Library, concluding: "The future of the printed book lies in its qualities as a physical object." Like many readers and designers, he feels that the tactile qualities of paper and the many ways books can be constructed and finished will continue to attract fans. This lavish presentation is oversize (9.5x13"), affording generous visual display. The earliest work is from 1471, and the most recent 2010 (so readers see more than the 500 years promised in the title); and the range of genres includes reference works, works of art, picture books, collector's items, and low-priced paperbacks. Each book's genesis and printing and design stories are told in text accompanying cover and page reproductions. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
