Intended for beginning literature students, this collection of classic and contemporary readings also includes a writing handbook with advice specific to writing about literature. The selections are mainly by American authors, but literature of other cultures is also represented. In the first section, material on elements of fiction, such as plot and characterization, is illustrated with stories. Part 2 presents three stories each by three writers--James Joyce, Flannery O'Connor, and Joyce Carol Oates--along with critical essays on the stories. Part 3 gives advice on two approaches for writing about fiction: explication and analysis. This section also offers guidance on citation, grammar, and punctuation. The final section offers more stories. The website contains projects, tutorials, a multimedia library, author bios, videos, and interviews. This 13th edition offers ten more classic stories, by authors including Zora Neale Hurston and James Baldwin. Arp is affiliated with Southern Methodist University.
