Noting that emotions are central for learning, Posey, a curriculum and design specialist, explains the brain science related to emotion and learning and provides strategies educators can use to design a learning experience that incorporates emotion for learning. She details six approaches: activating physiology with clear goals and purposeful, aligned options; designing for variability using Universal Design for Learning; fostering the development of brain networks by modeling, reflecting, and providing feedback; captivating attention through routines, novelty, and autonomy; scaffolding memory networks with multisensory and emotional connections and working to reduce cognitive load; and intrinsically motivating using theories of flow and self-determination and communicating about emotions. She also discusses the teacher perspective and how to design professional environments that will sustain educators' emotional energy for teaching.
