This is a third edition of a standard textbook, which was first published in 1992. It is a beginning text, for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses in counseling psychology. It takes a comprehensive view, divided into four parts. Part I introduces the central values of the field, its defining features and relationship to other psychological areas, including a survey of its history, development and ethics. Part II goes into the science underlying counseling psychology. This leads into areas of research such as vocational psychology, diversity and social justice, positive psychology, and counseling outcome research. Part III focuses on the practice of counseling psychology. There is discussion of the therapeutic relationship and the science and practice of assessment. The authors go deeply into each of the four primary theoretical approaches in the field: the psychodynamic (or psychoanalytical) , the cognitive-behavioral, the humanistic-experiential and feminist multicultural. Also in Part III are examinations of career psychology and group, couple and family therapy Part IV describes aspects of training to become a counseling psychologist.
