Imaging technology cannot yet show in living patients the senile plaques characteristically seen in autopsies of Alzheimer's disease sufferers, but is getting increasingly better at reflecting pathological changes associated with the disease. Here teams of scientists survey brain-imaging approaches that have emerged recently to reveal critical characteristics of brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Among the areas they discuss are structural imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging to detecting Alzheimer's diseases, diffusion tensor imaging, longitudinal neuroimaging measures to track the progression of disease and potential endpoints for clinical trials, and vascular co-morbidity and Alzheimer's disease.
