The Honorable Paul E. Devine is a Federal District Court judge in Chicago. His best friend is a fire department paramedic who augments his income by committing insurance-fraud arson. The two plaintiffs in Devine's latest case are in a unique position to help him settle an old score. If everything goes just right, the four of them will knock over the Federal Reserve vault for $100 million that will never be missed.Devine, a good judge, knows that what is right and what is legal are two very different things, but watching the gap between the two widen in case after case weighs heavily on him. In the aftermath of his wife's untimely death, he fears he can no longer resist the temptation to do something irrational...criminal...vengeful.Opportunity presents itself in Devine's courtroom, in the form of two employees of the Fed who work in the vault. At the head of the bank is a man who maliciously harassed Devine's beloved late wife. A plan takes shape while the judge hears cases and metes out justice in court each day. He begins to think that this could work. The four of them could do it. But once he sets the job in motion, Devine soon learns that carrying out the perfect crime and getting away with it are also two very different things. And indeed, the plan goes awry and people get hurt. The judge is suspected, and ultimately stalked by a police detective who has often testified in his court. Devine knows the detective is one of the good guys, but does that make him a bad guy?
