This collection of primary source materials on ethical, legal, and political issues related to drones used in warfare includes Congressional testimony, government reports, news articles, journal articles, and legal briefs. An introductory essay gives a detailed overview of the issues that will be discussed. Part 1 gathers sources on effectiveness, including an overview of the ethics of US counterterrorism strategy, a case for drones, and a source on how drones actually help the aims of Al Qaeda. This section contains an excerpt from the Stimson Center’s Recommendations and Report on the Task Force on US Drone Policy. The sources in Part 2 explore ethical issues surrounding drones, considering the risks of the CIA’s covert drone program, the case for a moratorium on drone strikes, and a perspective from a drone warrior. Part 3 gathers sources on legal issues, including a speech by Attorney General Eric Holder. Part 4 focuses on transparency and accountability, offering a speech by Barack Obama given at the National Defense University, a Department of Defense joint statement, and a joint letter from NGOs and human rights groups to President Obama. The book is distributed in the US by Books International. The book will be useful to scholars, students, policy makers, journalists, and others.
