Some of them look like random metal objects strewn vertically. Some are so streamlined they could sneak under cops' cars. Others are bumpy-looking and sport strangely intense men wearing plaid suits, peaked caps and wool leggings. Walker, the award-winning motorcycle author, curator, racer, tuner, team manager, talent scout and importer works his way through the most significant rides along the food chain, starting with the Gottlieb Daimler, which looks startlingly spindly despite its apparently being made from cast iron, to the new Triumphs and MV Agusta F4, which would be at home on a science fiction movie set, and a long trail of motorcycles from all points of the globe. The period photos are perfect, and Walker carefully integrates them into his descriptions of the technical and stylistic innovations of each and how they fit into the history of the big ride.
