In April 2012 the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) received a notification from the Vatican charging the organization with doctrinal and pastoral errors that were "grave and a matter of serious concern." One of the outcomes was an outpouring of support and solidarity with the sisters, an appreciation for their lives of selfless service, and evidence of a strong hunger for a type of spiritual leadership attuned to the signs of the times. This volume collects ten presidential addresses from the LCWR's annual assemblies. Beginning in 1978 with Sister Joan Chittister's reflections on the changing models of religious life, it concludes with Sister Pat Farrell's moving speech at the historic 2012 gathering, responding to the Vatican's notification.

Editor Sanders presents this collection of addresses from the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), delivered between 1977 and 2012. Prefatory comments giving historical context are presented for each of the ten speeches. Contributions address such issues as grounding in times of change, professing love and denouncing war, justice for women, mission and feminism, standing up as leaders, suffering in the Middle East, community of faith, prophecy, and hope. The last address responds the doctrinal assessment levied against the LCWR in 2012 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) which, although critical, spurred an outpouring of support for the LCWR. The epilogue invites the reader to consider the addresses as both a record of the maturation of a faithful organization, and as a call to consider one's own spiritual contribution to the world.
