This work summarizes and analyzes data on public education, based on the National Education Association's (NEA's) "Status of the American Public School Teacher" surveys, conducted every 5 years from 1955 to 2005. In addition to essays synthesizing and interpreting data, the book offers invited commentary by practitioners in education, business, politics, and research, including union officials and a state governor. Each chapter also contains a 'voice from the classroom,' offering stories from teachers. The book begins with a statistical portrait of the American public school teacher 1955-2010 and a broad overview of the history of American public education. Subsequent chapters offer perspectives on themes such as technology in teaching and learning, teacher salaries and unions, and the effects of inequality. Some commentaries point to the ways in which the NEA survey itself is a product of its historical moment. The book can be used in a survey course on public education. Drury is affiliated with the Surveys and Data Analysis Group and the Higher Education Research Center at the National Education Association.
