Citing current statistics which suggest that as much as 70 percent of children affected by trauma go on to lead successful lives, veteran mental health therapist Souers instills hope and emphasizes the use of a strength-based approach and seeks solutions rather than dwelling on problems. She aims to help teachers equip their students with the skills to succeed and to create safe and predictable space that also fosters their overall development. She discusses what trauma is and its forms. She introduces the biological nature of trauma and connects it to strategies which she shares throughout the book. She discusses the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how they affect learning, and also offers practical strategies for creating a “trauma-sensitive learning environment”. Sixteen chapters are divided into five parts: trauma; self-awareness; relationship; belief; live, laugh, love. Chapters are: understanding trauma and the prevalence of the not-ok; the manifestation of ACEs in the classroom; cement shoes: staying true to who you are; stay out of Oz: remaining grounded amid chaos; when in doubt, shut your mouth and take a breath; it’s not about you; no one said relationship is easy; the power of relationship; names, labels, and the need for control; doors and windows: remembering to explore all options; forever changed, not forever damaged; it’s ok to be not-ok; don’t let fear drive the bus; Grace; the cookie jar: the art of giving praise (and self-praise); the self-care challenge.
