From the National Research Council's Planning Committee on Thinking Evolutionarily: Making Biology Education Make Sense, this publication is based on discussions at a convocation organized by the committee in October 2011 in Washington, DC. The convocation gathered together individuals from education, museums, publishing, government, philanthropy, and non-profit organizations to articulate issues, outline resources currently available or in development, and develop a strategic plan for engaging all involved in infusing evolutionary science into introductory college courses and high school biology courses. The report is organized by the convocation's major themes, including the structure and content of curricula, the processes of teaching and learning about evolution, the tensions that can arise in the classroom, the target audiences for evolution education, and progress and resources, such as curriculum reform initiatives and professional societies.
