An oral history of the flight by some 20,000 German Jews to Washington Heights in New York City during the Nazi era. Draws on interviews with a few dozen people, some of which were used in the 1986 documentary film of the same name. Kirchheimer himself was one of the immigrants, coming to America as a five year old in 1936. The history covers events as early as Jewish participation in WWI on the side of Germany and as late as some interviewees' returns to their mother country in the 1980s and 1990s. Appends selections from Hitler's Mein Kampf and a chronology of events directly affecting German Jews from 1933 to 1945. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
