Description

Drawing on CIA documents, diaries, and memoirs, Riedel fills a gap covering the almost forgotten episode of the Sino-Indian War in the tense fall of 1962, which saw both the Cuban missile crisis and Chinese occupation of Tibet. From 1957 the U.S. clandestinely supported the Tibetan people in their resistance. Riedel describes how Kennedy managed to resolve both crises without either escalating out of control. With assurances to Prime Minister Nehru of India and a warning to China, resolution was achieved when Chinese troops were withdrawn two days later. Also discussed is the part Jacqueline Kennedy played in tamping down the rhetoric as she played hostess at several visits from Nehru and his Pakistani counterpart Ayub Khan to the United States, and traveled to both countries in 1962.
