Nearly 700 Catholic sisters from from 22 orders provided some sort of service during the Civil War. The Daughters of Charity provided the largest number—around 300—to serve in the war. They were the most-experienced nurses in the country at the start of the Civil War. They also had the most-varied experiences--on the battlefield, on troop transports, in hospitals and field hospitals on both the Union and Confederate sides of the battlefield. They even endured the occupation of their Central House in Emmitsburg, MD, by Union troops in the days leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.
