The Committee on Health Effects of Waste Incineration was established by the National Research Council to assess the health impacts of emissions resulting from incineration of hazardous waste, municipal solid waste, and medical waste. The project's scope excluded a comparison of risks among types of incinerators, risks posed by particular facilities, or risks attributable to this method of waste management as versus alternatives. Recommendations include regional assessment frameworks, better data on incinerators' contribution to existing concentrations of chemicals, and government linkage of data from facilities and of relevant databases. Includes an executive summary, biographical information on the Committee members, and case studies of the off-normal operations of six facilities. Annotation c.
