Intended as a supplemental text for traditional gender and culture courses in college anthropology departments (although authors Stone and McKee, both of Washington State U, argue for its adaptability for other courses) this work looks at the historical construction of gender relations for various ethnic groups in the United States. After introducing basic concepts of the relationship of gender and culture, two chapters look at the historical development of gender among middle-class women. Two more chapters address the topic as it relates to African-, Native-, Asian-, and Hispanic-Americans. Further discussion includes the results of a study conducted by the authors on gender on the college campus and a summing-up of how the material relates to current gender inequality issues.
