Young Shandra lives with her family in a village that borders the jungle in Congo, Africa. When God made little Shandra, her upper lip was divided in two. Shandra dreams of having a big, beautiful smile and playing with the other children, but she is timid and wary because her smile is so different. Shandra’s mother and father hear of an operation that can fix Shandra’s lip and let her travel to America with a kind doctor and his wife. Once in the United States, the shy little girl from Congo makes many friends—friends who help Shandra get the smile of her dreams. (All of the author proceeds for her published works go to the Roger-Ellen Foundation for assisting the work in health services throughout the world.)
