A report commissioned by Congress and prepared by a multidisciplinary committee of 18 scientists traces the economic, social, and environmental consequences to date of oil and gas production on the North Slope. It covers the physical effects on animals and the land, as well as the aesthetic, cultural, spiritual, and economic changes experienced by the people who live in the region. The report concludes that continued expansion of oil and gas drilling will exacerbate existing effects and create new ones, but it does not take a stand on whether the benefits derived would justify acceptance of the effects. The volume is illustrated with color maps and photos. It is slightly oversize: 8.5x11.25". Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
