Description

Liu (Chinese literature, U. of Maryland) explores a literary formula popularized in China during the late 1920s. The formula, geming jia lian'ai (revolution plus love) was favored by leftist writers of the time and continued to influence mainstream literature into the 1970s. Liu sees the meanings of both "revolution" and "love" and their relationship to each other as constantly shifting within the formula. These shifts are seen as bringing a number of troubling questions to the fore, such as the relationship of the individual to politics, the association of sexuality with politics, and the role of gender in representations of politics.
