Krantz adds to the continuing conversation about what is wrong with the legal profession by closely examining and pinpointing the causes. Among them he finds theoretically-oriented law professors, greed among attorneys at the top strata of “Big Law,” a slowness in changing options for women and families, and more. The author’s critical assessment includes discussion of these specifics: salaries and billable hours, the impact of the recession on big law firms, new competition, their response to a changing environment, opportunities for lawyers other than private practice, comparisons with other countries, and funding cutbacks. In the final chapter, Krantz makes several recommendations for remedying the ailing profession, such as mandatory pro bono requirements, expansion of legal services to moderate and lower income groups, and an increase in programs to help people represent themselves more effectively.
