This catalog contains a splendid collection of paintings (at a good price) from a 1998-1999 exhibition showcasing works from the Metropolitan's collections. Representing the development of painting in France from 1895 to 1950, 105 plates (all but one in color) are arranged in two sections: first, those acquired between 1947 and 1978; second, more recent acquisitions, 1979-1999. Brief text discussing the development of the Museum's collections introduces each section. Among the artists represented (not all are French, but all worked in France): Balthus, Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Dubuffet, LTger, Matisse, Miro, Modigliani, and Picasso. Annotation c.
